Has My Vehicle’s Catalytic Converter Gone Bad?

CEL in Raleigh, NC

What Is It?

The dashboard light is ambiguous, and the component has a long name. You don't have to worry, however, because we're here to help. The check engine light--also called the CEL, malfunction indicator lamp, or MIL--is part of the onboard diagnostic system required by the government to be a feature of all new cars sold in the United States. The purpose is to ensure that vehicles operate in a way that is least harmful to the environment. Thus, the system flags any issues that arise with combustion, the fuel system, and the exhaust system with universal trouble codes. The catalytic converter is an exhaust system component that uses a chemical reaction between precious metals and the combustion by-products to "clean" your auto's emissions. If this part fails, the dashboard lamp will illuminate. Operating locally since 1946, King's Auto Service in Raleigh, North Carolina, can assist you with your CEL needs for any domestic or Asian model.

How Will I Know?

Perhaps you're wondering how you'll know if your catalytic converter has failed. The good news is that this part doesn't often go bad. The CEL's appearance on your instrument panel is, of course, likely your first indicator of trouble, but this can represent a myriad of issues. Another indicator might be a bad smell. An ailing catalytic converter often emits a stench much like rotten eggs. Also, you might notice that your automobile is slower to accelerate than it once was. As the problem progresses, the engine may shut itself off after operating for a few minutes, or it might fail to start. The only way to be certain that this is the underlying cause, however, is to have us check your transportation.

What Do I Do?

Your vehicle will not pass the required North Carolina state inspection with the check engine light on, and continuing to drive with known issues can worsen the mechanical troubles. Therefore, it's important to attend to the underlying cause as soon as possible. Our ASE-certified technicians use state-of-the-art equipment to accurately identify and correct your transportation's problems. We stand behind our repairs with a great 36-month/36,000-mile warranty, and you may even find a discount applicable to your situation. Be sure to check our Specials page. Even though catalytic converter failure is serious, alleviate your fears by bringing your vehicle to King's Auto Service for CEL service.
