Summer Road Trip Prep: Essential Auto Services

Road Trip Prep

Yippee! Summer is finally here, and you have a few vacation days. Time to hit the road. Perhaps you're headed to the beach, the mountains, or a theme park. You're relying on your car to get you there, and few things would be worse than being stuck beside the road instead of reaching your destination. So plan that trip, but make sure to prepare your vehicle before you go. The ASE certified technicians at King's Auto Service in Raleigh, North Carolina, can assist you by checking out your ride and taking care of any necessary services before your next trip.

Preparing Your Car for the Long Haul

Although you should always keep your car well maintained to prevent potential problems and head off more costly repairs, it is particularly important that you attend to your car's basic needs before embarking on a road trip. You are likely driving many more miles than you do on a typical day, and you may be driving in the hotter conditions of summer. To make sure your vehicle performs at its best and is not unduly stressed, it's a good idea to change the oil and filter before you go. It's also a good idea to change the air filter (so the car can "breathe" better) and the passenger cabin air filter (so you breathe well and don't smell dank odors). If it's time and/or your mechanic recommends it, you should change the spark plugs, as well. Your technician should check your belts and hoses, too. Many travelers feel safer if they purchase an extra set of belts to fit their make/model car and carry those as a spare. All other fluids (brake, antifreeze/coolant, windshield wiper, and power steering) need checking and topping off. Don't forget to test the battery and tires/tire pressure also, and make sure your headlights are clean. In addition to these mechanical details, also use common sense when packing your belongings into the vehicle. It is best not to load luggage onto the top of the car even if you have a cargo rack because it increases drag and decreases efficiency. However, if you have no other option, be sure any containers atop the auto are well secured. Also, do not place items inside the passenger cabin in a manner that blocks your view in any direction.

Your Car’s Vacation Planner

Perhaps you have planned your own trip, or maybe you have been assisted by a travel agent. Either way, someone has probably attended to the important details surrounding your experience before you ever leave home. Your car deserves the same treatment, especially since it's the one working hard for your leisure. King's Auto Service can be that vacation planner that ensures your car is as ready for the road as you are.
